Full Moon in Virgo: Three of Swords

The energy of this tense, nervous, potentially cathartic Full Moon is represented by the 3 of Swords tarot card.

The classical representation of the 3 of Swords card is a heart pierced by 3 swords. It's considered a card of pain and disappointment. Those times in your life when everything we hold sacred turns out to be a lie or when we truly believed we had found love only to find that we terribly, tragically wrong. That's the energy behind that card.

What's driving this Full Moon is the energy of the Virgo/Pisces polarity. Just like Leo and Aquarius which I wrote about last month, Virgo and Pisces are opposites. Both signs represent the pursuit of perfection or completion. Both are always in the process of becoming and seem to always be chasing an elusive ideal. Their shared challenge is to appreciate things as they are and see the beauty in that. Virgo is preoccupied with a clean, healthy body and environment and in working out the details which make the body and the environment run smoothly and efficiently. Pisces is preoccupied with finding that place of perfect peace, harmony, and love and with bridging the gap between the spiritual and the physical. Both signs can be other-oriented and are highly attuned to their environment. Nervous and sensitive but strong and resilient in a completely understated way. Even though these signs are mutable, they can become fixated in the pursuit of their ideals.

The Sun and Moon in this Full Moon are in a tense standoff with Mars who is still hanging out closely with Vesta. In addition, the Sun in Pisces has merged with Neptune, the ruler of Pisces, in its home sign. The feeling is one of being overwhelmed by stress. We are feeling unsettled, tired, nervous, and unable to make sense of what is going on. More than likely, these feelings have been building for a while. Since we're in the Virgo/Pisces axis, we've probably been turning these feelings inward. But it's getting to the point where we can't hold them in any longer. Our ideals will be offended and we will go off. But it won't last. We are in so much turmoil, with so much going on, we can't hold a grudge.

That's the energy of the 3 of Swords. When this card shows up, it's time to express our pain, anger, and disappointment so that we work through it and get past it. Because with the 3 of Swords, it's about addressing misguided ideas about what love is and how love should be and what makes a good relationship. These ideas are often passed down to us through our upbringing and through societal messages. We're told that we have to be a certain way or have a certain type of relationship. We're told that "love" has to look and act a certain way and if it does not appear in that exact way, we will reject it as wrong. However, that leads to us being disappointed and hurt again and again and again. When we get to the point of the 3 of Swords, we realize that if we want to have whole, happy, and healthy relationships which meet our needs, we're going to have kill some of our sacred cows. That can be a painful process. The healing leads to growth and a maturer understanding of what love is and how it shows up in our lives.

When we get to the core of those issues, healing is possible. This is the opportune time to think about our relationships and communicate with those nearest to us what really makes us happy and what we really want and need. It's the perfect time for us to clarify within ourselves love means to us and to develop our own ideals about happiness and wholeness in relationships.

In this turbulent time, the relationships that really honor who we are will adapt and survive. Relationships which have run their course will end easily and almost painlessly. It's time to feel our pain, express it, and let it go.
