HOLY HERETIC SUNDAY MEDITATION – January 20, 2019

I’m not going to post the video of those silly boys in MAGA hats. I prefer to lift up the wisdom of the elder who embodies a tradition much older and more deeply connected to the soil we live on. As he speaks these words, you can hear and feel the echoes of all of his Ancestors speaking through his voice and living through his body.

In this country, white Americans claim an identity which is based largely on who is excluded. The construction of “whiteness” was created out of the need to separate the privileged few from the rest. It’s key method of exclusion is capitalism, the idea that everything can be owned and controlled and therefore sold in a marketplace. The rules of the marketplace, not so coincidentally, are determined by the same people who determine the criteria for whiteness.

The self-taught genius, Neely Fuller, used to say that if you don’t understand racism (white supremacy) and how it works, everything you think you know will only confuse you. People who try to explain MAGA fever and the sudden urgency to secure the borders in strictly economic terms are completely confused and baffled. They find themselves getting tangled up in their own arguments and defending the open cruelty of the actions of the current federal authorities. So many “well meaning” white people, who go to church every Sunday, some of whom are probably parents of the boys in the video, are deeply uncomfortable about what is going on but become aggressively defensive if someone accuses them of being racist. They’re embarrassed by their children’s actions and can’t understand why they would act that way. But children always show what’s really going on.

The wise elder says that this land is not meant for walls. I take comfort in that. I know that the land itself will not allow any wall built to stand. The Guardian Spirits of this land will have the final say.

Today’s action: During this powerful eclipsed Full Moon, take some time to connect or re-connect with the Spirits of the Land. The best way to do this is to commune with your favorite tree. Touch it. Talk to it. Sing to it. Bring it a gift and leave it there. Honor the Guardians of the Land and give them the energy they need to resist the building of walls.
